City of 2 Extremes

My visit to Bangkok brought me both fascination and unease.

No I'm not talking about the heat, the humidity or the intensity of noise, activities and the crowdedness. The unease arose from the stark contrasts of the 2 extremes wherever you go. One minute you are in a posh hotel or a upscale shopping complex, but the moment you walk out of those premises, you are confronted with the tough everyday life faced by the ordinary Thais slogging through a day typified by traffic jam, polluted air, heat, and the not so ordinary Thais who line the street begging for a living.

It gave me even more unease when some romantic people uttered it was the contrasts which gave Bangkok its charms and should stay. (Indeed quite sadly it will stay that way like it or not).Ironically, these romantics shop in places such as this.

But isn't life about the two extremes wherever you go?
